Description
Fall Concert for the SMSU/Community Concert Band
The SMSU/Community Concert Band, conducted by Dr. John Ginocchio, will be performing the concert “Moods for Band” on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre. The concert will feature the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Rutter, David Holsinger, and Dmitri Shostakovich. The concert is free and open to the public.
Performing with the ensemble is new SMSU vocal adjunct instructor, Mrs. Emily Lodine-Overgaard, on Bernard Gilmore’s “Five Folk Songs for Soprano and Band”. The piece features folk songs from several cultures, including Mrs. McGrath (Irish), Yerakina (Greek), El Burro (Spanish), and All the Pretty Little Horses (American). Emily Lodine-Overgaard is a nationally renowned vocalist having performed operas and oratorios with orchestras throughout the United States. This year, she brings her considerable experience and skill to SMSU as a new voice instructor.
The band will present a premier performance of a new work by Stephen Paulus. The piece, “Three Moods for Band” was commissioned by the Minnesota chapter of the College Band Directors National Association with the assistance of many university band programs around the state, including SMSU. Stephen Paulus resides in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. His music has been performed by many of the top orchestras, choirs, and bands from around the world. This is the very first piece he has ever written specifically for wind band. We are proud to be among the group of schools that had a part in this new musical achievement for him.
Also included in the concert program are two holiday numbers that will also be featured on this year’s “A Very Prairie Christmas” concert on Saturday, December 5th at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts at Marshall High School. One of the pieces that will be performed is an arrangement of the beautiful, original work by John Rutter called “Candlelight Carol”. The other holiday number will be a transcription of Mannheim Steamroller’s version of Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.”
The SMSU/Community Concert Band rehearses on Thursday nights during the school year. The ensemble is open to all students at SMSU regardless of major. It is also open to any musician in the Marshall area. No audition is required. Anyone interested in joining the band is welcome.
