Public Ways Worker (Seasonal--2025 Season)

The City of Marshall is currently accepting applications for seasonal Public Ways Workers. Under direct supervision of the Public Ways Superintendent, this position performs routine work in the maintenance of the airport, streets, and public ways. Maintenance includes but is not limited to: equipment, buildings, and grounds.

Duration: this seasonal position is expected to last from early spring until late fall 2025.
Schedule: generally Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with flexible hours based upon the weather. 
Hours: up to 40 hours per week 
Pay range: $14.00 - 17.00 per hour depending on experience 
Eligibility for hire will require the successful completion/passage of all pre-employment screening requirements, which include:  a driving and criminal history background check, and reference check.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Operate hand and power mowers or tractor driven mowers to cut grass on fields, along streets and public ways, and on city-owned grounds. 
  2. Plant, transplant, water, and trim trees, shrubs, and flowers.   Perform landscaping work as directed.   
  3. Perform cleaning and garbage removal from city-owned buildings.   
  4. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including but not limited to: pick-up truck, water truck, hedge trimmer, chain saw, pole saw, cement/asphalt saw, lawn mowers, weed trimmer, fertilizer spreader, utility vehicle, and other small hand tools.  
  5. Assist in special events preparation.
  6. Adherence to all safety procedures, department procedures, and organizational policies.
  7. Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  8. Perform other related summer public ways maintenance duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  
 Valid driver’s license.
 Must be 16 years of age or older when the job begins.  
 
 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
 Preference will be given to candidates who are 18 years of age or older.
 Previous experience and satisfactory job performance for the City of Marshall. 
 
 ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
  • Knowledge and skill in the care and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform general parks and public ways maintenance activities.  
  • Ability to operate equipment and vehicles required for this position in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate and interact with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain, paved and unpaved trails and sidewalks, as well as within the public rights of way.  The employee is exposed to a wide range of outdoor weather conditions, occasionally working in extreme heat or cold weather.  
  
Work hours for all seasonal public ways positions may vary; and when necessary, evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required.  Some positions may regularly work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
